Residential Rooftop Plant

A multi-storey residential building required isolation of rooftop HVAC plant to prevent vibration and low-frequency noise from reaching the apartments directly below. Mwendo specified Sylomer® anti-vibration mounts for the full plant installation.

Challenge

Rooftop plant — chillers, cooling towers, and air handling units — transmits vibration directly into the building structure when mounted without isolation. In residential buildings, this manifests as low-frequency noise and perceptible vibration in upper-floor apartments, often presenting as a persistent hum or rumble during night-time hours when background noise levels are lowest.

Solution

Sylomer® anti-vibration mounts were specified for each piece of mechanical equipment on the roof. Mount selection was based on equipment operating weight, dynamic force output, and the required insertion loss. The mounts were supplied with technical data to support structural engineer sign-off.

Outcome

• Vibration transmission to residential floors eliminated — no perceptible movement in upper-floor apartments
• Low-frequency noise complaints resolved following installation
